Interview: Francesca Querin
Francesca Querin is a textile and surface pattern designer. I was lucky enough to interview Francesca about her work and career plans.
Hello! Thank you so much for letting me interview you. How are you?
Hi Rhiannon, thank you for the opportunity to be showcased in your blog, I love it and it's a pleasure!
What are your career plans?
I would like to dedicate to this for the rest of my life, grow in the area and make collaborations with international fashion brands, that would be amazing!
Have you always been into illustrations, textiles and design?
Yes! since I was little I like drawing. I loved colouring those books with Disney artworks and everything related to painting. As I grew older I became interested in fashion so, if decided to study fashion design, where my passion for textiles began.
I adore your work. What inspired you to start doing surface pattern designs and textiles?
Oh! thank you so much, it means a lot to me. Well, as I mentioned before, my interest in textiles began when I studied fashion design, and then I had the opportunity to work in a company from my country, Venezuela, where I was dedicated to design prints for two brands, and I realised that definitely this would be my passion.
What equipment do you use for your work?
I use a sketches block, colours, pencils, markers, pantone colour chart, a computer and designs programs.
What tools or materials could you not live without?
A paper, a pencil and Adobe Illustrator of course!
Why has social media been an important platform for you to use?
Because is a way to show your work and have feedback of people from anywhere in the world, that helps you to make your work known. Coming from Venezuela, I would never have imagined having followers from Japan, UK or Australia, just to name a few, it's actually nice to have that kind of response.
Why do you use Instagram for your work?
Instagram is the most visual social network at the moment, so, is the easiest and clearest way to show and publish art and design.
Do you have any favourite pieces of design work or illustrations that you adore at the moment?
YES! Now I'm obsessed with fruits, I always want to illustrate fruits I don't know why haha, there is a lot of beauty in them. There is also a kids wear brand that I love his illustrations, it's called Mini Rodini, it's amazing!
What do we hope to see in this up and coming year for your Instagram and your work?
I hope I can collaborate with many brands and continue sharing my work with people and with this beautiful family of design.
What projects are you currently working on?
I'm currently working on personal projects, I'm designing a collections of patterns by seasons and trends.
Do you have any advice for anyone who would like to start drawing or creating stationary?
Oh! in a fact I'm the one who need advices hahaha, but I think the most important thing is to create an identity and hold on to it.
What's the best piece of creative advice you've ever been given?
A friend from my past job told me once, always have material to back up and defend your designs. And it's true, the designers should always do a lot of research to inspire us in the subject in which we will work, and to sustain our designs.
